Tel Aviv Diary - September 12-16, 2007

September 12, 2007

Now who flies from Israel the day before Rosh Hashana? - only those rushing back to their families and/or to Ouman. So why was the flight so crowded?

For Rosh Hashana, Ezi feels compelled to make a pilgrimage to B&H Electronics. Since they close at 1 on the eve of the holidays, we raced down there, despite his bad back, despite our jet lag, despite the many people we would love to party with. And, after the proper gesticulations, we went home appeased. Of course I had to pay homage to Macy's too. And now to shul. Don't laugh you Tel Avivians. In the diaspora there are very specific and overwhelming needs.

I've been thinking so much about the difference between the holidays in the US and Israel - but all i can come out with are cliches. I had a great time in the synagogue on w 88th, singing the old songs - but with more interesting melodies) and i heard the same sermons i heard from infancy to the time i left for Israel (35 years ago). And this afternoon we went to Tashlich - the Hudson river must be full of sins tonight. It was all a joyous event, however, as Ezi will show you in a moment, an occasion for fun and gossip.

But still there were prayers.

In Tel Aviv we don't let the prayers get in the way of our fun and gossip.

No news from NEwport. I'll be back in NY tomorrow. With pictures and stuff.

I will be needing an Orthopedist for Ezi's back. Any ideas?
