Tel Aviv Diary - October 4-8,2015 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

Every incident triggers thousands of old traumas - we react extremely because we are reacting to years and years of war. The mayor of Jerusalem announced that citizens with guns should carry them, while the mayor of Tel Aviv encouraged people to go to Jaffa and eat hummous. I'd probably go for the hummous but would keep my back to the wall.

But we went to Ikea, trying to build in our homes the atmosphere that everything is ok.

Two husbands , white shirt and paious, carry m-16s, the guard has his gun at his hip, and otherwise the situation is of medium hysteria. Other than that Ikea was more crowded than ever.

My computer was being supersized yesterday so i couldn't be alone with my diary here. Of course it is for the best because i had time to think about the 'situation' here and how easily it could be fixed with good will. At the moment people are being stabbed on the street and the accompanying fear is paralyzing the entire society. We cancelled our trip to Taybeh and our teacher is coming here. That bothers me greatly - it seems in times like this we close ourselves in instead of moving out. In our heads, I mean. we don't see the possibilities for coming closer. But if we backed away from Al Aksa, and didn't let Jews visit there for a while, and if we increased the programs for co-existence (there are a lot of them but they are all grass-roots, not government supported). And if we got people like Hanan Zoabi to shut up for the time being and imposed sanctions on government officials who voice opinions that are inciting...

Even the crazies who are talking about using biblical law as a back up for government law should be shut up now - our version of shariya - should be silenced for now. let the voices of reconciliation be heard.

Remember how I started this diary? When I got tired of getting all the phone calls from my friends in the US about whether I got blown up on the streets of Tel Aviv? Well now that there are stabbings and automobile terrorist acts daily I'm not getting any phone calls. Maybe because the world news isn't advertising these terrible attacks - a thirteen year old boy stabs a thirteen year old kid on a bicycle. the whole country seems to be terrified but outside the borders of Israel there are greater terrors.

a day of horror. simple. people stabbed, shot on the streets. anyone the terrorists could get hold of.
