Tel -Aviv Diary - May 19-23, 2016 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

I'm beginning to think that Bernie Sanders is purposely making trouble so that Trump will win and the revolution will come. Our own politics are so complicated it would not be beyond belief. For example Bibi knew he would be putting BHerzog in a bind, knew he would be switching Boogie Ayalon, while he was pretending to negotiate a coalition. Chess. We should all play much more chess. learn to see the greater plans against us.

but, as my mother-in-law used to say: We won't stand by as they shit on our heads. we will open our mouths.

Almost midnight. We had a family reunion with Ezi's family. No politics. just family. there was even a slideshow of the preview generation. Gives one a sense of continuity. Having very little of my own I appreciate it.

Because Ezi's family never talks politics and I was dying to, I dreamt all night about Boogie, Yom Tov Samia, Yair Golan, Rubie Rivlin, and all the people I could think of who have the power and the knowledge to turn over the government. They were all together in a room -most of them guys who had backed away from the army, like Danny Rothschild but it included women like Meirav Michaeli and Orly Levy and Stav Shafir. It was a satisfying dream, creating a political situation in which the Palestinian leaders could come together with each other to negotiate with us. I think respect for humanity as well as respect for self were my main criteria for inclusion, and i felt good.

Unfortunately someone woke me up in the morning with a disturbing phone call, and i fell back to sleep with a bit of a nightmare.

With a new Minister of Absorption, one that I have met before long ago in that position, I know that my worries are not limited to the aggressiveness of Liberman. The concentration on certain populations, the lack of a general picture of the needs of the entire area, will continue to be reflected in every aspect of our society, and the violence will continue to grow. Hell is not a steep sliding slope - it is a matter of gradations.

So my neighbor who is an Auschwitz survivor, but didn't come out sane, asked us to help out with this letter announcing that holocaust victims are reimbursed for medical expenses. She is quite paranoid and doesn't want to fill out documents but eventually was persuaded to send in her name and address and now told me with great joy, "Now I can get teeth!"

While we wait for the second shoe to drop - that is for the evil giants to decide on a government, I will let you in on some personal stuff. I don't usually discuss what happens on committee meetings, but today at the annual Yiddish Writers Association board I couldn't help writing it down. One of the more vociferous members had recommended changes to the constitution and we had to vote on it. Only one of the changes could have made a difference but the first two suggestions inspired me:

The Elders of the Yiddish Writers’ Association Review an Addition to their Constitution

Item one: Membership of a member terminates
with the death of the member.
Item two: To terminate a membership
The member must notify the organization
30 days in advance.

.

For this I dragged my body to Tel Aviv.
