Tel Aviv Diary - March 8, 2012 Karen Alkalay-Gut

Purim AND International Women's Day. And still Vashti is not recognized for her contribution to feminism, a contribution that is negated by the apparent passivity of her successor. Vashti is the model of evil in the stories of the extreme religious - she refuses to obey her husband. But as Itzik Manger pointed out in his Megilla, if she'd obeyed she'd also have been in trouble for appearing nude before the court. And Esther obeys her uncle and cleverly seduces her husband, using her underhanded feminine wiles to fulfill her uncle's orders.

One must consider this situation in its many aspects.

Ezi, you will be happy to know, seems to be recovering nicely so far. I, on the other hand, have big time flu symptoms. This may be sympathetic, or just a cold, or the reactions to the implants that have to come out. But although Ezi shouldn't be exposing himself to germs, he's got to deal with me.

For the rest of the world, there will be daylight savings tomorrow. But not for us. Even though we need to save on electricity more than ever, we're still in the dark for at least another month.

Sorry about that - it's March 30 So there are only a few more weeks to wait.

March 10, 2012

Hello. Yes nearly 100 rockets fell in Israel today, but I was just visiting a friend who had no idea that something was going on. Impossible to conceive but characteristic of this country. Half the people are scared stiff of what's going to happen and the other half aren't aware.

Me? I'm both.

One of the guys we killed at the beginning of this last round was one of the prisoners freed in the Shalit deal, Muhammed AlHannani. He was planning an attack with his friend, the guy in charge of the people's army...

And we were in the playground today, swinging grandchildren and sliding down circular slides. let's hope those little kids never have to go to war...

S routine of hysteria. It's amazing how fast one gets used to it. One friend of mine has just decided to stay inside her 'safe room' until everything is over.

But she's weird.
