shopping. shopping like crazy. from ikea to dorin frankfurt to naot - fridge is empty, however. and no work got done. tomorrow is Ezi's birthday and Oren and I have been making suggestions to him all week about what we can do to celebrate. in the end, his greatest wish is to meet with all the kids on the beach for a swim and hummous. you have to love him.

I try not to write about my family too much, but today for Ezi's birthday, we got most of the clan together on the beach for dinner and a bit of a swim. Simple and perfect.
It's a very informal restaurant. Next to us was a group of soldiers, armed for battle but taking turns to swim. Beautiful boys, warm and friendly, so very normal - except for the telescopic lenses on their weapons.
on the news on the religious channel there was an item about some local Arab dentists who attended a conference in South America and when it came time for the anthems of participating countries to be played asked to have the Palestinian anthem (the one about fighting to the death). what is the alternative? the Hebrew anthem is all about our eternal longing for freedom in our Zion homeland. Surely we can do better than that. Surely we can create a more inclusive anthem. I can't but we could.

So we're fiddling while the south burns. Acres and acres destroyed by burning kites. and we are occupied with the fact that the insurance has finally sent repairmen to begin fixing our home. i admit they didn't go too far - a carpenter came and took down the cupboards that have been rotting on the walls and left them in the middle of our dining room ( where Ezi for unknown reasons instructed him to leave them.) Tomorrow the plasterer should show up, and then we can begin to reorder our lives. maybe not.
What do I care? I had a shot of hyaluronic acid in my knee and it seems my troubles are over, for now at least. I went to the doctor's with the package from the pharmacy and a walking stick so i could walk back to the car if it is too painful. But I was ashamed to admit it - instead I told the doctor it was for beating him if it was too painful. But it was simple, and easy and a few hours later I began to feel good. The pain that's been part of my life for six months disappeared.

actually it hasn't disappeared. it's just mre focussed on my knee cap. maybe because we were lugging stuff around all day. the plasterer and painter came and finished the job and now all that's left is a dismantled cupboard in the middle of our living room. But we had help. My cleaner, Yelena, came in the afternoon and started working. Around five in the afternoon I looked at her and wondered how anyone could work for so many hours. we had taken breaks but she hadn't except for a quick cup of coffee, so when we went shopping we bought her an ice cream cone. To see her leaning back in the Eames chair with her ice cream was an incredible delight to me, and i've been remembering this all evening with a chuckle.

When we went to visit Orit last night, we saw from her balcony in the avenue the stage set up for the start of the Gay Pride parade. it panicked me and we left for home before the street was cleared of parked cars. I hate crowds. and from the photographs from her balcony this morning there seem to have been thousands of people there. and 10,000 on the Gaza border this morning, throwing pipe bombs at the soldiers and sending up incendiary kites to fire the fields of israel.
