Amnesty is warning that the Kurdish activist Zaynab Jalalian will be executed tomorrow. Look her up here and see if you would like to send a letter

Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

Dear Madam
As a simple citizen, I would like to request you to take the necessary actions towards the Iranian authorities to preserve the life of Ms Zaynab JALALIAN.
Thank you
Truly yours

No less pressing is the situation of Gilad Shalit. here. There are so many things wrong with his capture and imprisonment I can't even begin to list them.

We had lunch the other day in Mughrar, in A-Razi Restaurant. It hasn't been discovered yet apparently, in part because it is hidden on the right side of the road up to Mughrar.

This is A-Razi, who brought us whatever we wanted and then some.

His good will and his tasty food made the experience an unforgettable one and I'm happy to recommend him. We ate there a few months ago at the poetry festival in Mughrar, but because of the number of people the fare was usual. Good, but usual. These are my pictures - not Ezi's - so they're a bit banal, but the place isn't. I especially like the way his mother makes Freekeh.Freekeh should be made the way you make rice, but with twice the water. Also, because of its nutty taste, add bacharat and cinnamon - maybe cloves and allspice too. Oh, and I make rice by frying onions in olive oil, together with the spices, and then chicken stock and water with the grain.

Academic freedom has been a big issue here lately. I particularly like today's haaretz response on this subject.

LAst night I did another one of my crazy radio programs - this time on Emily Dickinson. Imagine - i have been doing programs of Henry Miller, Williams Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, T.S.Eliot, What Whitman, Allen Ginsberg, and others - They have been great talks. but is anyone listening?

No - We didn't go to the Ambassador's party, or even to White Nights in Tel Aviv. We started out White Night in Pappa's for a family reunion and with any luck we'll be back tomorrow evening when we recover. There is so much going on - music shows like Barry Sacharov, Gidi Gov, Oy Division, fashion sales, Everyone on the streets. But we've got people to see, so we braved the traffic and shared pizzas and amazing desserts.

In general it was a day of eating for us. Lunch at Gillie's on the port was okay, and the company and the view were great. All our visitors from abroad have reiterated the complaint that they eat their way through Israel. And I think that's all I've been doing for a long time.
