i have no idea what happened yesterday. i mean if i reconstruct it i remember i had a yiddish lesson in the morning, then a manicure, then picked up kids from school and babysat while ezi took Orit to Apos then wrote a letter to income tax about why the writers' association hasn't filled out forms in the past 4 years, then watch suddenly it was morning. now i'm on my way to read poetry in a yiddish class and then cook lunch for saturday because tomorrow is an antishefa where i sell books and before that we want to go to the memorial for arlozoroff. here's the secret about the murder of Arlozoroff. Bandi and Sara - my late in-laws - were visiting friends who lived near the beach when someone rushed in and said that Arlozoroff had been shot. Bandi took Arlozoroff in his car to the hospital where he died. When they reopened the trial of the murder, Bandi was asked to testify. "What did you say?" i asked him when he came home. "I said it was long ago and i am an old man and don't remember what he said to me...Why stir up old enmities" "What did he really say?" "something about Arabs shooting him." Did he really say that? I don't know whether he meant it or just wanted to shut me up. But there were other stories he told me that turned out to be precisely true - stories i will say i am too old to remember.

the question Antishefa asked today was 'what does literature mean to me?" and answers were not available. some of us were asked to sell books and some of us managed to make some money, which is not something usual for poets. The thought itself is pretty cool to contemplate.

While we were playing ball in the pool, among the wall-to-wall children, the south was experiencing wall-to-wall fires. Beehives, entire farms, disappeared in the kite assault from Gaza.
And somehow, in the pool, we started talking about race. "I'll bet there are no Sephardis here," she said. "I can't tell, but during the week the pool has many Arabs, and I don't see them today," I said. "Holiday," she answered, and I realized how isolated we are in out lives. The pool is covered with a kind of bubble, as so are we.

blood tests this morning - as usual i am in and out in less than half an hour. unfortunately i seem to have a leftover habit from childhood where i need to reward myself for going through anything medical, and wound up buying a bathing suit which also took less than half an hour.

I know you've heard this before from me, but it's a recurring ritual in our house. We go for a PET-CT in the middle of the night. Appointment for 3 a.m. so we leave our friends early and go home to sleep. i take half a pill so i will go right to sleep but just as I am dropping off the phone rings and the guy on the other end asks Ezi to come in at midnight instead. The rest is a blur. We got back by four in the morning and I woke up at 10. The rest of the day was shot.
no, wait - lots of things happened - from spies to the world cup - from the successful cataract operation of our paranoid schizophrenic holocaust graduate neighbor to the cowardly separation of children from parents in the land of the free.
