Tel Aviv Diary -July 22-26,2015 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

big slam poetry evening this afternoon - don't think i can get my head together with my body to make it.

Didn't make it to the Leyvick meeting, either.

How many things can one miss in Tel Aviv on one day? I'm getting letters from stir crazy friends who are staying home because of the heat. Everyone wants to have a party. Or at least have an early breakfast on the beach.

Yes. Yes, exhausted and thin, but back in business. Trying to retrace my steps before it all started.

Everyone has an opinion about Iran. Except me. I mean of course I don't believe them. But what is the agreement about? First I haven't read it. Then I don't know how it is interpreted by each side. I don't think the different countries know how Iran interprets it.

when my hairdresser didn't show up in time i called - about an hour later - and she was just on her way. she'd intended to drop her kids off at the amusement park nearby, but discovered it was closed. why? because although the tragic fast of Tisha B'av was moved to Sunday so it wouldn't fall on Shabbat, it is beginning to be celebrated today. i'm not sure i get it.

An interview with the Canadian-Israeli soldier who fought with the Kurds against Isis, Jill Rosenberg, will stay in my mind for a while. Not only was she cool about her role, she answered the question of how she would react if she were captured, with "you always save the last grenade for yourself." And when she was asked who was the greatest danger to Israel answered, "Iran."

Tisha B'Av. I've forgotten Jerusalem. I wouldn't have forgotten Jerusalem if our government's behavior towards the inhabitants of Jerusalem had been more gentlemanly. I know that the Mosque of Omar was built on the ruins of our temple and now the remnants of the holiest place in Judaism is being destroyed. Nevertheless I want the holiness to remain in our humanity.

So did I fast? Well the fast was postponed for tomorrow because you don't fast on Shabbat. So Rena you will be happy to hear that we played "cards against humanity." It was a wonderfully cleansing experience - especially after all the discussions of political correctness and appropriateness we've been involved in the past weeks.
