Tel Aviv Diary - January 29, 2011 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

What are we doing here? Egypt is going in for a full scale revolution and we should be there, to help. The danger that all the wonderful work the revolutionists are doing will be taken over by extremists who will curtail the rights of the individuals is great.

I have been translating a play by Hanoch Levin, and the absurdity of his world invades the news to me.

I just can't do it. the only thing i want to write about is my prayers for a good future for the Egyptian people. I am having a wonderful time in the new world but no words come out of my computer except Egypt Egypt Egypt....

why have i gone silent? Because I don't think anyone outside Egypt has any idea of what is happening there, including me. It smells like Iran, and there is a great chance that the outcome will be very much like the fish that begin the film of "Dr. No." you know the two fish that are fighting and the third that waits for them to get all tired out and then gets them both. Mubarak won't be keeping the order any more - he's worn out. And when there's no order who comes in?

Well, I know nothing, and being in the U.S. is keeping my ignorance complete. I don't even understand the news I do get - even when I read it on the web. Take Al Jazeera. Tell me what it means.

All right, all right, I'll change the subject. All of our plans have been altered due to the snow storms that keep following us wherever we go. We have been spending a great amount of time within family circles and our experience of the United States has been limited to a bit of television. A very little bit of course - because I"M GLUED TO THAT SIMPLE-MINDED CNN. but when I let go and turn the channel, and don't find any interesting movies, I watch SIMPLE-MINDED COMMERCIALS. No subtlety, very little sophisticated humor, just hard sell. The normal face looking into the camera telling you how important it is in these times to watch your expenses and how much they saved buying this insurance or that face cream. Fascinating. thank goodness for kindle.
