Tel Aviv Diary - January 28-February 1, 2016 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

Isn't today the anniversary of the "loyalty oath"of the Vichy government? Shouldn't we be reminded of it? Boomy today sent me a cartoon of Miri the teacher telling the children coloring a flag of Israel that if they go outside the lines, they won't get to go out for recess.

We're about to go out for dinner - Friday night was never a time for going out. Only the out-of-towners did that. Friday was for family or catching up. But we've been changing. I used to hate missing the special friday night news program. Now I'm scared to watch it.

It was a great dinner - at Chupak on Ben Yehuda. seafood. I haven't been there for years (since I hadn't felt like going anywhere but Papa's for years). And this time I noticed the first item on the bill. "warmth and love...00" pretty cool. No wonder the celebrities were there.

you know what? I don't know if I should be afraid. the last time i was told to be afraid, and almost stayed home because of it, was when the terrorist was said to be in our neighborhood. Helicopters flew over our hears, police were everywhere, and now they say they knew all along he'd gone back to his home town to hide. I always had reason to trust the security leaders, police, etc. Now I don't trust them any more.

So we went to the Safari today, where the security guards are Arab, the signs are all in Arabic as well as Hebrew and English, and the animals seem much happier than many of the people. It is always a blast, especially now that the inhabitants are all in heat. The peacocks all had their tails open, and there were some monkeys who were acting just like the guys on the Tel Aviv beach.

watching footage of Tel Aviv with Ezi is pretty amazing. See this film?

If you don't read Hebrew never mind. Those titles on the bottom don’t tell you much. At the beginning they show you Saraya – the central government office (beit haoztar, where the arabs planned attacks on jews)– and later the explosion (lechi, 1948) and the ruins, where they take out bodies. There are so many other stories like that in the film. Like the centrality of the Herzlia Gymnasia (High School) and its demise. It’s really fascinating.

I was sitting in a school yard today with Omer, waiting endlessly for some bureaucratic procedure, and found myself explaining the sociology of the cats. Begin with the gender distinction. Males have larger heads and walk differently. Then the pecking order - which male cat is in charge of the yard. which male cats are vying for this position. etc. etc. "How do you know all this?" Omer asks. "i live in Tel Aviv."

the exhibit we saw this evening at the Kfar Saba gallery was small but powerful. anti-erasure. maybe that's a good translation. about how important things in our lives are erased. like how we learn to erase ourselves in society.
