Tel Aviv Diary - January 24, 2011 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

I seem to be on a buying spree all week. It is much fun but different from everywhere else. Went to the Persian shop in Ramat Hasharon for discount hair stuff and got my shampoos for the quarter. I call him the Persian because he is always watching persian television. This time it was a John Wayne cowboy movie dubbed in parseee. I stayed to watch it with him because it was so great - Persian translated into Hebrew.

I am on the other side of the ocean - far far away. It is nice to take a break, and we got an okay at the last minute from the doctor, so we took off without fanfare, and almost no time for duty free. Fortunately I met a former student at the cosmetics counter and he help load me up with luxuries. I will miss the change enountering of friends in this big country, but I'm looking forward to 2 weeks of family, art, and poetry.

And into a snowstorm. So beautiful to look at - we even built snowmen on the balcony of our room. And the crunch crunch crunch of walking on untread snow - all the way to the drugstore for cold medicine and Bengay. Ah, the heavy wet snow - exactly what we need in Tel Aviv. Not what we need on our way to Boston.

What is going on in Egypt? I get the news here but not the flavor of it, and it is impossible to imagine. Who is involved? Who is suffering? who will take over?

It seems so far away from proper, self-contained Boston, yet it effects all of our daily lives. More and more I feel more related to the Arab people of my neighborhood then the people of Europe.
