Tel Aviv Diary - December 30, 2014-January 3, 2015 - Karen Alkalay-Gut

December 30, 2014

Instead of stalking the streets of New Orleans this morning we stayed in bed and caught up on "Homeland." It felt more real to me. New Orleans may be the best place to be in the US for New Years, but I'm not in an escape-from-the world mood..

What a limited person I am. I wandered into a gallery on Chartres Street - and suddenly felt at home. Chagall was in the window and I had passed it a few times but there was so much more inside. Elliott Gallery on the corner of Chatres and Royal has the painters and paintings i want.

Caught a couple necklaces thrown down from the balconies. pushed through the crowds. did it all. After a rich and dramatic dinner at the Arnaud's jazz club, we went to the waterfront to see the fireworks.. . Everyone was celebrating. Me, I kept remembering the rockets this summer. Why waste money on this? Why not just buy the people of New Orleans new coats? Such a party pooper.

Despite the fact that there are now ways to ship retails purchases to Israel from the US, we go mad as soon as we hit the streets in NY. It must be habit. I don't understand, but i do it. I literally am crazy with the idea that there are shoes in my size, all i want to do is buy shoes, buy clen laundry, buy presents, even if they aren't the bargains they used to be.
